Introduction

The USSD Committee on Levees will hold a Levees Workshop, on November 2-4 in Memphis. The Workshop Planning Committee is chaired by Dean B. Durkee, Gannett Fleming, Inc. Presentations by levee experts, followed by panel discussions, will allow for in-depth examination of Seepage Issues, Penetrations, Closure Structures and Hydraulic Height. The Workshop experience will be enhanced by an exhibition and networking events. During a field tour on November 4, participants will visit a relief well project near Memphis, and learn about the many challenges facing aging levee systems.

Engineers, owners and operators, regulators and other interested parties are encouraged to attend, to learn about the latest technologies related to this critical infrastructure, and specific issues related to levees in the mid-south region.

Exhibition

An Exhibition will be held Tuesday and Wednesday. To maximize opportunities for exhibitors to meet with Workshop participants, several functions will take place in the exhibit hall, including continental breakfasts, coffee breaks, lunches and a reception. Exhibition information.

Registration

The registration fee includes the workshop sessions and handout materials, exhibition, continental breakfasts, breaks and lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday, a reception Tuesday evening, and transportation to and from downtown Memphis Wednesday evening. The fee is $495 for USSD Members and $545 for non-members, with a $50 discount for early registration. A Young Professional Fee of $345 is available to participants age 35 and younger. To receive the Early Registration Rate, you must register by October 22. The Late Registration Fee applies to registrations received after October 22 and on-site registrations. The Registration Fee can be pre-paid by check or credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Discover) or purchase order. Reduced registration fees are offered to USSD Members, Workshop presenters. Memphis Hilton

Cancellation Policy: To receive a refund, USSD must receive notice of cancellation by the end of business on October 27. All refunds are subject to a $25 processing fee. After October 27, the registration fee is not refundable, but substitutions are acceptable.

Hotel

The Workshop will be held at the Hilton Hotel, 939 Ridge Lake Boulevard, Memphis, TN 38120. Located in the heart of the East Memphis business district, the hotel is surrounded by a multitude of restaurants. It is 15 minutes from Memphis International Airport and 18 miles from the downtown riverfront area. The hotel offers complimentary airport shuttle transportation and free self-parking.

The special rate for Workshop participants is $95 single or double, plus tax. The rate includes complimentary guest room wireless high speed internet access. The room block at this rate is guaranteed only through October 19. Reservations made after October 19 will be on a space available basis.

Enjoy Downtown Memphis

On Wednesday evening, complimentary transportation will be provided to and from downtown Memphis and the Beale Street Historic District, birthplace of the blues. Enjoy one of America's most famous streets, with its many restaurants, nightclubs and shopping opportunities.

Continuing Education Units

Colorado State University, Division of Continuing Education, will grant CEUs after successful completion of the Workshop. CEU information will be available at the Workshop.
